The History of Mother's Day

Did you know that Mother’s Day is an American invention? The holiday was created in the early 1900s by Anna Jarvis. It is celebrated all over the world during the months of March, April or May.  There have been celebrations of motherhood all over the world predating the American version. It was Miss Jarvis who campaigned in America to make it a nationally recognized official holiday.

Interesting fact: Anna Jarvis trademarked the phrases “second Sunday in May” and “Mother’s Day.”  She also wanted the spelling and grammatical usage to be a singular possessive –  Mother’s, for each family to honor their mother and not to confuse it with the plural possessive that would pay tribute all mothers in the world.

Emma’s Tea Room has several events planned for May and Mother’s Day. Allow us help celebrate the mom in your life.
